Veggies and Fruit and Grains : Are you keeping this resolution?

Wow! We are already five months into 2010. Have we been keeping our resolutions? What about that one that made it into our top ten list – the resolution to eat more vegetables, fruit and grains? Well here is some information to help urge you to commit!

Health Canada recommends choosing one dark green and one orange vegetable each day. Dark green vegetables are rich sources of folate. Folate prevents birth defects and keeps your heart healthy. Orange vegetables and fruit are high in beta-carotene, which becomes vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A helps protect you from infection and is important for night vision.

Here’s how to put this resolution into action:

    For breakfast;  Make a tropical smoothie with mango, papaya and melon with orange juice and yogurt.
    For lunch;      Have a salad with a dark leafy green like spinach or arugula, or a soup with Swiss chard or kale.
    For dinner;      Add broccoli or Brussels sprouts to pastas and stir fries. Switch up sweet potato for mashed or roasted potatoes. Make a soup with butternut or acorn squash.

Consider; Americans are trying to eat more vegetables and fruits according to a new survey that found veggies and fruits number-one among those seeking a healthier diet. The survey of 1,000 US adults conducted for the International Food Information Council found that 55% are changing what and how much they eat in the interest of health. After vegetables, cited by 60% of those seeking healthier foods, the most popular choices were fruits and fruit juices (53%) and whole grains (11%). This is a bandwagon you definitely want to jump on.

Create a Rainbow;
Vary the colors of produce in your meals; try adding a new fruit and vegetable to your diet each week. Toss an apple into your brown bag or whip up a fruit smoothie for breakfast. When making dinner, opt for topping your fish or chicken with vegetable and fruit purees. Keep bags of frozen fruit and vegetables handy in the freezer and create ready-to-eat crudités in your fridge. Need an emergency snack to keep in your gym bag? Why not whip up a mixture of dried apples, apricots, pears, and cherries? Dried fruits are a tasty way to satisfy your sweet craving and add to your fiber quota for the day.
