Dominica, The Nature Isle

Looking for somewhere different to vacation?  Consider visiting Dominica.  Dominica sits in the Eastern Caribbean midway between the French islands Guadeloupe and Martinique.  It is but 29 miles long with an area of about 289 square miles.  Its terrain is mountainous with a ridge of mountains (inactive volcanoes) running through the centre of the island.  Most of its population live in coastal settlements.

Politicians and others have joked from time to time that if Christopher Columbus, who is said to have discovered the islands were to return to the West Indies, the only island he would recognize is Dominica. Therein lies Dominica’s appeal. The island is still inhabited by indigenous Carib Indians whom Columbus met when he landed in Dominica in 1493, their culture fiercely preserved.

Also referred to as The Nature Isle, its rugged terrain, thick green forests, numerous waterfalls, clear, winding rivers, mysterious beaches, coves and caves are captivating.  It is no wonder that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was filmed there.  The island proved to be the perfect pirate haunt.  Pirate Master, the spin off reality show was also filmed in Dominica.

So, what is Dominica’s appeal?  Its rich history and culture showcasing an exciting blend of African, Carib Indian, French and British influence, its easy going people, its natural beauty and freshness, numerous festivals and celebrations, and its distinct cuisine all come together to make the island one of the most hauntingly beautiful destinations.  If you enjoy hiking, mountain climbing, tubing, scuba diving, deep sea diving and swimming in crisp, clear rivers and lakes, Dominica is the destination for you.  If vacationing for you is a holistic experience, where you can rejuvenate in warm, sulphuric springs and pools and enjoy peace of mind in a calming atmosphere, visit The Nature Isle.  Or maybe you crave the excitement of carnivals and festivals where food, music, colour, bodies and history come together in one rhythm. Then, Dominica is also a vacation destination for you.
